When it comes to guitar solos, Warren Haynes is one of the giants of phrasing. Each and every one of his solos is singable, containing almost as many rhythmical gaps as actual notes. It’s his use of space that I love about him as a guitar player. In the lick above I have really focused in on this idea and deliberately left a ton of space between the licks. Think of them as breaths between phrases. It is absolutely crucial that you have the rhythm of the song you are playing along to cemented in your head. Strike each and every note cleanly, sweetly and with authority.
